The main hydraulic pump is usually the most expensive component on a Kobelco excavator after the engine itself. On SK200 / SK210 machines, a pump replacement costs more than a year of careful maintenance. Here is what actually keeps pumps alive.
1. Hydraulic oil is the pump's bloodstream
- Change hydraulic oil and filters on schedule — and sooner in dusty environments (Middle East, Africa, quarry work).
- Use the specified oil grade. Thicker or thinner oil both damage pump components in different ways.
- Water in the oil is a silent killer. Milky oil means immediate attention.
2. Watch the early symptoms
Pumps rarely fail without warning. Slow travel or swing speed, delayed boom response, unusual whining at operating temperature, or overheating hydraulics all indicate internal wear. Catching a pump at the "regulator or plate" stage costs a fraction of a full replacement.
3. Don't ignore the small parts
Couplings, pilot pumps and suction strainers protect the main pump. A failing coupling that goes unchecked can destroy a healthy pump in hours through vibration and misalignment.
4. When you do replace
Whether you fit a complete pump or rebuild with piston, plate and regulator parts, insist on verified components with photos. A "cheap" pump that fails after 500 hours costs far more than a quality unit.
